View of the existing patio. We will be demolishing this retaining wall and building a new one using natural sandstone. This will be moved back several metres to provide more seating space near the house. The whole garden will be reshaped to create different areas within the garden.
Jan 10th - Day 6 We have removed the old retaining wall and have spent the last week preparing the ground and removing soil. Extending the patio meant removing part of the hill behind and tomorrow we will be using a hydraulic breaker to remove the bedrock. The top circular patio is in and the side seating area ia also built, as well as the upgrading of the existing pond with a new boulder edge.
Jan 15th - Day 9 The sandstone wall is well underway and we are still digging out to create the lower patio area. The foundations are in for most of the wall and we are getting ready to construct the higher walls, stairs and raised pond.
Jan 23rd - Day 15 The patio is being laid, the high walls finished off and the upper path to the corner circular patio is being put down. Damian has finished one set of steps and has made a good start to the raised pond.
January 30th - With a good part of the construction complete, the big clean up begins. The walls and patio are pressure washed and the joints made ready for final pointing. The lighting is all in and connected. 14 tonnes of topsoil has been barrowed in for the planting beds and lawn area. The loam has been spread and levelled for the turf arriving on Friday.
Feb 8th - The pond is finished, the turf is down and the last bits of construction are almost complete. We have been held up by the freezing temperatures which have prevented us both from planting and making cement mixes. We have concentrated instead on setting up the driveway. Damian has given any smooth pieces of sandstone a textured finish.
Pictures taken above just before pointing. Finishing touches and the garden is almost complete.
